Spending the day with your photographer during for your engagement shoot also helps them discover the best ways to make you both look your best! Having a relationship with your photographer built BEFORE your wedding day ensures that you feel comfortable, relaxed and jazzed for your upcoming wedding celebration photos. Getting comfortable in front of the camera is hard. Yes, we all do bathroom selfies when you are feeling particularly self-assured, but professional photo shoots are not the norm for most of us!

If you find yourself feeling awkward in front of a camera, you are not alone. It can be totally nerve-racking thinking about having your photo taken. So, what does that mean? Shake off those nervous feelings with an engagement shoot.

Make it a fun bonding experience for both you and your partner. Molly King is a Cincinnati-based wedding and lifestyle photographer.

The photographers want that time to get to know you and your significant other; it helps them create more meaningful and personal images. Choosing a wedding or engagement photographer comes down to two things: editing style and personality. Some photographers focus on dark, contrast-filled images. Others go for light, airy, and ethereal styles.

Or, consider which styles would look best on the walls of your home. The next important step for choosing your wedding or engagement photographer is studying their personality.

You want to enjoy their company! But you should also meet them. I like scheduling quick and informal meetups, or at least FaceTime calls, to get to know the couple outside of email. That way your photographer has time to edit the images, and you still have time to get those invitations designed.

For the time of day, most photographers will recommend evening or early morning for soft, warm sunrise and sunset hues. King starts her sessions about an hour or two before sunset to capitalize on this flattering natural light. Then, they can scope it out, get some ideas, and figure out any necessary permissions for photographing. If you and your significant other love travel, you can also opt to get your engagement photos on vacation.

Less is more when it comes to selecting the perfect engagement-photo outfit. Avoid deeply saturated or bright colors like a vibrant red or orange; those colors will reflect back on your face, especially in the sun.

Engagement photo sessions are a great time to experiment with wedding-day makeup, too. If you have a vendor in mind for day-of beauty, use your engagement shoot as a trial run. That way your big day will be flawless!
