He learned trapping and hunting. He was hired by renowned explorer John C. Fremont as a guide and worked on expeditions from to , then again exploring California in During the war with Mexico, Carson carried dispatches for the army.
He served as an Indian agent. In , he became a brevet brigadier general, and the following year, was commandant at Fort Garland in the San Luis Valley. Quite ill, he returned to his home in Boggsville. His wife died in childbirth and 10 days later, Carson passed away at the hospital at Fort Lyon.
